A Voice for Iowa Families

Mike Bergman is running to bring common-sense leadership and a strong commitment to Iowa's public schools to the Iowa House.

Meet Mike

20 Years in Mount Vernon. A Lifetime of Service.

Mike Bergman has been a resident of Mount Vernon for 20 years and is running as a Democrat for the Iowa House District 83 seat.

  • Served 26 years in the Air Force, retiring as a Colonel in 2006 — managing the development and fielding of new systems, including three years working on budget issues at the Pentagon.
  • Serves his local community as a mediator for the Sixth Judicial District.
  • Owns and manages 330 acres of Linn County farmland, including tillable ground he has planted to native prairie.
  • An avid outdoorsman — lifetime hunter, fisherman, and canoeist, as well as a motorcycle rider and private pilot of 15 years.
  • Deeply committed to conservation as a lifetime member of Pheasants Forever, a member of the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation, and a supporter of Linn County Conservation.

My Stance

"Public funds belong in public schools — every Iowa child deserves a great education in their community."

Mike threw his hat in the ring because he could not sit by and watch the incumbent run unopposed after seeing a series of concerning bills come out of Des Moines.

Public Education Funding

Mike is a fierce defender of public schools and believes the recent education savings accounts are "one of the worst pieces of legislation he's ever seen." He strongly opposes these voucher programs because they lack a means test for funding and have no strings attached to the dollars.

Water Quality

Protecting Iowa's natural resources is a priority. Mike believes we must collect data on nitrate levels in our water and heavily criticizes the legislature's recent refusal to fund a popular, low-cost $300,000 water quality sensor system.

Local Wage Control

Mike supports local decision-making and opposes recent state legislation that prevents local municipalities from setting their wages higher than $7.25.

Higher Education Independence

He opposes legislative overreach into our state universities, specifically viewing the establishment of the Center for Intellectual Freedom at the University of Iowa — and the requirement for students to take six credits from the institution — as a major issue.
